Graduation Day

We have come to the end of the English Summer School in Ottawa,
Canada. At noon, all the teachers, leaders, school staff and students
have met together for Graduation. Mr. Dylan, the Academic Dean, has
set a few words about the meaning of the program and the improvement
in our use of English as a language of communication.
Each student has received his/her diploma and we've had lunch
together. It was a time for farewells and wishing the best for
everyone (yes, a few tears ... of course!).

Now it is time to go home, have dinner with our host families and say
our goodbyes to them also. Tomorrow we will all meet at the Ottawa
International Aiport before noon for our flight to Montréal. From
Trudeau International we'll take flight AC816 to Barcelona. If
everything goes according to schedule, we should be landing in El Prat
around 07:30 am.

See you on Saturday!

Rideau Hall (Governor General)

Today was our last Wednesday in Canada. First, the day began like
always with the classes but this time we had to do the final exam of
our level of English so the teachers could give us our final marks.
After that, we were planning the party in the park with all the class
tomorrow, together with the rest of the students. We were having fun
and joking with the teacher, all in English. Next, we finished
watching the film Matrix. I personally think it is a difficult movie
because the film uses a very scientific vocabulary!
After classes we visited Rideau Hall, the official residence of the
Governor General of Canada (he represents the Queen of England in
Canada). We took a tour with a very good guide. He asked us questions
about the visit, but we couldn´t get all the answers! So, no prize!.
Finally we finished the day with a party, an emotional party. I think
we should enjoy as much as possible these last days, like kids. Only
two days left... it is so sad!

Sunset

Nice sunset today by the Rideau Falls. They are two waterfalls located
in the same city of Ottawa, where the Rideau River empties into the
Ottawa River.

Last Tuesday

Today is our last Tuesday here in Ottawa. It has been a normal day with classes in the morning. Each group of students has done different activities according to their level of English.
We have had some rain during the morning but it was sunny later on.
When we finish school we went to Rideau Center to finish buying presents and things for our families and friends.

Huge spider outside National Gallery

Louise Bourgeois is the artist who has designed the monumental bronze sculpture Maman purchased by the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and recently erected on its exterior Plaza. The 30-foot-tall spider, designed in 1999 and cast in 2003, is the sixth and last in this series of environmental sculptures by the French-born American sculptor, painter and printmaker.

Alexandra Bridge

Today, as we do every weekday, we went to the classes and in one of them we have finished seeing the movie The Pelican Brief with a new teacher since Mr. Sullivan has gone on holidays. Today the time has changed considerably. We've had a high temperature of approximately 22 degrees. After the classes we have walked to downtown Ottawa crossing the Alexandra Bridge with very nice views of the river and Parliament Hill. We have also visited the Catholic Cathedral. Opposite the Cathedral there is an enormous spider, right in front of the National Gallery of Art. We have taken many photos there. Afterwords, some of the students have also visited Byward Market. Others have gone to the Mall.

Canada Aviation and Space Museum

This Saturday we went to watch the Changing Guard Ceremony which takes place in front of the Parliament. The performance started at ten o'clock in the morning and it was finished a half hour later. The guards were dressed as the British ones, with a bearskin hat, a red jacket and blue trousers. It may be very hard to wear this clothes in summer because it was really hot!
Afterwards, we took the bus and we went to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum  (http://aviation.technomuses.ca/mobile/index.html) where we could see amazing airplanes. We learnt that Canadian people were pioneers in aviation and they made the first planes, which were very simple as they didn't have any motors, but they were difficult to use.  We also saw Second War World planes, some ones belonged to RAF and the other ones to Luftwaffe and we saw other rescue and emergency planes and helicopters too.
We had lunch at St Laurence Shopping Mall and after that we all went to Rideau Centre just to spend our free time there and have fun until we decided to go back home.

Calypso Water Park

Most of the students take bus number 8 to go to classes every morning.
We start classes at 8:30 am. Sometimes we watch scenes from movies or
recordings for class.

After classes, we've gone to Calypso Water Park
(http://www.calypsopark.com/parc-aquatique/en/). To go there, we have
taken the typical yellow school bus that you see in movies. It is a 45
minute ride.

On arrival we left our bags in a reserved place for us and we had
plenty of time to enjoy the rides and the many attractions of the
park. After returning to Ottawa, each student has gone home.

Hottest day on record in Ottawa

Yesterday seemed like a normal school day, but what it made it
different was the extremely high temperature we had all day long. We
didn't expect Canada to be that hot, but yesterday we reached 37
degrees Celsius. If we add the humidity factor it felt like 47
degrees. The newspapers reported that this was the hottest day on
record since 1955 in Ottawa!
After classes some students weny shopping, others decided to spend
some time indoors in a mall (with air conditioning) until it was time
to go back to our host families for dinner, TV and bed.

Harry Potter

Today has been a normal day with lessons in the morning, then time for
lunch, and after we had the afternoon lessons. But that was the worse
part of the day because Sully, the teacher we like the best, and also
the funniest, won´t be any more our teacher, because he will go on
holidays. After classes everybody took the bus and then we went to the
Rideau Cinema to watch the last Harry Potter movie. It was fantastic,
very original and also it has the 3d effect that makes you feel more
surprised. During the film some people cried while others ate pop corn
.... it has been a nice day, so everyone went back home as soon as
their bus arrived!!!!!

Festival at the Park

Lunch at Andrew Haydon Park

School BBQ

This morning we did something different because, after the morning
classes, we went with the teachers and everybody from school to a very
nice park by the river: Andrew Haydon Park.
When we got there we had different activities such as football games,
barbecue and also some dance and music numbers prepared by the
students.
We ate: hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, salads and chips.
At the end of the day we all went home a little tired. It had been a
very long day!

Monday after Montréal

The group, today, after class, went to the Rideau Centre. Our first
idea was to play another soccer game, but the weather was not good.
Yesterday we had a thunderstorm and the grass was still wet. Plus we
were still quite tired from yesterday's trip to Montréal, so we
thought best to take it easy.

Unexpected visitor

Chipmunks are small striped squirrels found in North America,. This
one decided to have lunch with us!

La Ronde

Entrance to the Park in Montréal, Québec, Canada.

Montreal & La Ronde

Today, we went to Montreal. It was a 2 hour journey but, finally, we
arrived there. First of all, we went to the top of Mount Royal where
we had a fantastic view of the city. But some of us got lost in Mount
Royal when we wanted to return to the bus. This 200-hectare park
occupies part of the mountain that lies in the midst of Montreal
island, and includes the highest spot in the city (234m), so it is a
big park with lots of different paths to hike and stroll.
Then, after leaving some of the older students at the Eton Centre, we
went to LaRonde theme park where we nearly spent all the day. At the
theme park, we found amazing roller coasters.
On our way back to Ottawa we drove through a storm for about 40
minutes and, finally, we arrived to Ottawa and we returned with our
host families after a long day.

Changing of the Guard

The Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place every day at 10:30 on
Parliament Hill. It is a ceremony filled with music and colour. Today,
Saturday, some of the students have taken the opportunity to see the
ceremony which lasts for about 25 minutes.

Friday activity

On this Friday, as we do every weekday, we have met at the mall
(Rideau Center). Then, together, we've taken the bus to school
(Estrie). We've had class until 11:30. After eating our lunch we have
gone to the Museum of Nature. We've visited all the galleries of the
museum and the ones I liked the most are the exhibits on mammals and
the Bird Gallery. The Museum is in a beautiful gothic castle. After
the museum we have spent some time at the Rideau Mall. When it was
time, we took the bus and we went home with our host families.

Yes, we won!

Yesterday we arrived early at Estrie School. That's because we are
hard-working students!
We had class, like everyday, and in the afternoon we went to a park
near our school building.
We went there with other students from l'Estrie because we where going
to play a soccer match we had planned early in the week.
First we played a Colombian team and, afterwards, a team from Emirates
(Arab students). Our friends from Top School played with us. They were
a great help! We had also a group of students cheering for us.
Well, it was not easy but, at the end, we won both matches. Of course,
everybody was very tired so each one of us went back home to recover
from the extraordinary physical effort.
It was an amazing day!

Parliament Building

Today we have gone to classes like every single day. We had lunch all
together just talking about tomorrow's football match (we will talk
about it tomorrow) and finally we have finished our classes at three in the
afternoon. Then we took a bus which carried us downtown. The plan
was visiting adn taking a guide tour to Ottawa
Parliament. It was quite interesting! Tthe room I liked the most was
the library! It was awesome, so nice and smart, and also so quiet, the
opposite to us. When we finished the tour we just walked to Rideau
Centre where we spent a little bit of time hanging out. To finish our
day we took our buses to go back home and spend some time with our
host families.

Canada Science and Technology Museum

Early this morning in class we corrected our homework and learned to
form gerunds, nouns and adjectives. Later, after the break, we had an
interactive class doing collage of things that makes you happy and
makes you sad. In the afternoon class we improved our skills in
reading, writing and speaking. When classes ended we went to the Canada
Science and Technology Museum. We saw things about the weird and
wonderful world of science and technology in Canada and around the
world. The most interesting things were the exhibitions like the Crazy
Kitchen and the Steam Locomotives. The museum has a lot of information
about Canadian people. It shows how research and inventions have
changed the way we view the world and have transformed just about
every facet of life from the way we cook to the ways we communicate.

Oops!

Official ceremonies are very formal ... except sometimes! (just kidding).

Monday: back to class!

After the weekend, we've gone back to our lives as students. We are
divided into 7 different groups according to our level of English. We
start classes at 8:30am. We have a short break at 10:00 and we go back
to classes until 11:30. We have a long break (1 hour) for lunch.
During that time we are able to use the computer rooms, talk to other
students, play table tennis and take our minds off the books. Then, at
12:30pm, we resume classes until 15:00.
Today, after classes, we've had time at the Rideau Shopping Center
which is downtown. Afterwards each one of us has taken the bus to go
home.
Next to the Rideau center, there's the Memorial of The Unknown
Soldier. There's a ceremony every hour (changing of the guard) until
5:00pm. Very British!

Awesome weekend

This weekend we went to Toronto and Niagara Falls with other students
from Estrie Language School. It is about 6 hours by bus so we stopped
first at the Toronto Zoo. We saw lots of different animals there!
After the visit we went to the CN Tower in Toronto. We went to the top
(346 m.). It took only 58 seconds for the elevator to reach the top.
The Tower, in total, is 553 m tall, one of the highest buildings in
the world.
Next, we went to Niagara Falls, about one more hour by bus. It is like
Las Vegas, a city of lights. We saw the Falls: one of the wonders of
the world! We saw then at night and the following morning we took the
boat 'Maid of the Mist`which takes you almost under the falls. And
yes, we got all wet! It was awesome!

Museum of Civilization

Today is Friday and, after a week of hard work, we've finished classes
earlier. After lunch we have visited one of the best museums in
Canada: the Museum of Civilization at Gatineau.
http://www.civilization.ca/cmc/home
The museum is divided into 2 sections: permanent and temporary
exhibitions. This time of the year they have an exhibition on Japan
which explains the local culture and traditions of that country.
Probably the best is on the 3rd floor where they have the Canada Hall:
it recreates life in different parts of this large and diverse
country.
Worth mentioning is also the exhibits on Artica and what they call
"First peoples" (the native Canadians).
To sum up: a great dose of culture!

Canadian War Museum

A bright and shinny day! This afternoon, right after classes, we've
visited the Canadian War
Museum (http://www.warmuseum.ca/splash.html).
The building resembles a fighter airplane. There are different rooms
with displays about the different conflicts in which the Canadian Arm
Forces have been involved.
We've liked, particularly, the room with Hitler's own personal car,
and the basement, where there's a huge collection of tanks and heavy
war equipment.

Finally, some rain!

After some unusually warm days we had some rain this morning. The
temperature is down a bit and it feels more comfortable.
After classes we've gone to Stanley & Louise's house. We've enjoyed
the pool and a nice picnic with KFC, pizza, salads and icecream.

Westboro Beach

This afternoon, after classes and lunch, we've gone to Westboro Beach
on the Ottawa River. Not quite as our beaches back in Spain, but it
was OK for a river beach ... and what a river!

Group Meeting

1st School Day

This morning the students have taken different tests to establish
their level of English. They've also had a personal interview with one
of the teachers. Tomorrow they'll have the results which will be used
to define the different classes. After lunch (11:30 - 12:30), the Home
stay coordinator has given the students all the information about Bus
transport, school rules and activities planned for this month of July.
